What Can You Do at HYCC?

HYCC is more than an ice rink. It combines indoor sports, youth recreation, supervised social spaces and community facilities.

Ice Skating & Hockey

Two regulation-size ice rinks, public skating, hockey practice, Learn to Skate classes and skate rentals.

Basketball & Volleyball

A large gym with six basketball hoops, a divider for two courts and scheduled public play.

Youth & Teen Center

Supervised games, social space, homework resources, computers and age-appropriate activities.

Indoor Walking Track

Three-lane elevated walking track for members and eligible pass holders during operating hours.

Classes & Recreation

Seasonal arts, sports, skating, fitness, basketball, vacation and after-school activities.

Meetings & Celebrations

Birthday parties, school-group skating, private meeting space and approved gym/ice rentals.

Choosing a center: HYCC is especially useful for ice sports and indoor youth recreation. If your priority is general fitness, aquatic facilities or a different municipal membership system, compare the offerings in our Curtis Hall Community Center guide for Boston before planning your visit.

HYCC Membership Fees & Benefits

An HYCC membership is useful for regular walking-track use, public gym access and the supervised youth center. Ice skating, certain special activities and registered programs can require separate fees.

MembershipOfficially listed price
Barnstable resident, individual$20 per year
Non-Barnstable resident, individual$40 per year
Barnstable Public Schools studentFree
Resident family$15 per person/year; minimum 4 household members
Non-resident family$30 per person/year; minimum 4 household members
Guest day pass$5

A four-person resident household therefore pays $60 per year under the listed family rate, while a four-person non-resident household pays $120 per year. Ask about pricing and eligibility before purchasing for a larger household.

Included benefits: scheduled open gym, walking track, game room and study lab. Membership does not automatically reserve a place in every class, public skate session or tournament.

How to Get an HYCC Membership

1
Check eligibility.

Determine whether you qualify as a Barnstable resident, non-resident or Barnstable Public Schools student.

2
Complete the official membership form.

Prepare your household contact information, member names, dates of birth and requested membership type.

3
Visit reception.

Bring the form to 141 Bassett Lane during staffed hours and ask what proof of residence or student enrollment is required.

4
Pay and collect your membership credential.

Follow staff instructions for payment, membership tags and facility rules.

Public Ice Skating: Prices, Rentals & Hockey

HYCC operates two ice rinks: the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Rink and the Patrick M. Butler Rink. Both have 85-by-200-foot ice surfaces. The Kennedy rink accommodates larger sporting events, while Butler frequently hosts public skating and lessons.

2026 fee update: The Town of Barnstable’s published 2026 approved-fee information lists increased public-skating prices effective January 1, 2026. HYCC’s public ice webpage still shows some previous amounts. Confirm the current charge at reception before buying.
Service2026 approved-fee information
Adult public skating$9 admission
Student public skating$7 admission
Senior public skating$4 admission
Skate rental$7 per pair
Stick practice$14 where standard stick-practice fee applies
Rock Night$8 admission

Military/veteran, toddler/stroller, freestyle and 50+ practice sessions may have different rates. Confirm the price for that session rather than assuming the adult-skating fee applies.

Example: two adults renting skates for a standard public session could pay about $32 combined at the approved adult and rental rates: two $9 admissions plus two $7 rentals. This is an illustration, not a confirmed live checkout amount.

First-Time Skating Checklist

  • Find a public skating session rather than a stick-practice or private-rink booking.
  • Arrive early to collect properly fitted rental skates.
  • Wear warm, flexible clothing and socks suitable for skating.
  • Bring gloves and appropriate protective equipment, particularly for children.
  • Follow staff instructions for rink entry, safe skating direction and supervision.
  • Check whether a special session has age, equipment or registration restrictions.

Public skating tickets are sold at the skate-rental booth. If you are purchasing for a group or beginner, call in advance to confirm rental availability and any group-specific arrangements.

Skating School & Learn to Skate

The HYCC skating school introduces beginners to basic skills and offers instruction through its skating programs. The official recreation portal provides program details, class dates, eligibility, fees and policies.

To enroll, search for Learn to Skate on the official registration system, choose an appropriate class, check skill and age requirements, and complete the registration. Classes can fill, so do not rely on older session dates.

Basketball, Volleyball, Pickleball & Walking

The indoor gym has six basketball hoops and may be divided into two courts. HYCC offers scheduled public basketball and volleyball, plus seasonal indoor pickleball. Access depends on the gym calendar, event bookings and membership/pass status.

The elevated walking track has three lanes, with one lap listed as 1/12 mile in membership information. That means approximately 12 laps make one mile. Walking-track operating hours are listed as 8 AM–8 PM daily.

Choosing a recreation pass: For a facility comparison involving indoor tracks, fitness equipment and municipal recreation admission, see our Durango Community Recreation Center hours and fees guide. HYCC’s membership does not cover access at other cities’ centers.

On your first visit, ask about track direction, age restrictions, walking etiquette, and any scheduled interruptions.

Youth Center, After-School Programs & Teen Services

One of HYCC’s major strengths is its combination of physical recreation with supervised youth development and learning support.

Lyndon P. Lorusso Youth Center

Hosts youth recreation and activities, including the SOAR after-school program for eligible Barnstable sixth- and seventh-grade students.

Supervised Teen Center

Games and social space with billiards, ping pong, foosball, air hockey, television and video games.

Study Lab

Eight computer workstations and internet access for homework, research, job searching and application tasks.

Family Engagement Support

On-site Barnstable Public Schools family engagement resources can assist families with school registration and English-language learning support.

The supervised teen center is available to eligible members and day-pass visitors. For specific after-school enrollment, do not assume general facility membership is enough; programs may require a separate application.

Current Types of Barnstable Recreation Programs

The Town’s registration catalog includes categories such as:

  • Basketball clinics and youth leagues, including grades K–8 options.
  • After-school cooking, gardening, crafts, strategy games and creative arts.
  • SOAR and school-vacation recreation.
  • Indoor pickleball, volleyball, dodgeball and seasonal sports.
  • Adaptive recreation, inclusive arts and therapeutic programming.
  • Community yoga, chair yoga and selected adult learning activities.
  • Learn to Skate and public-rink activities.

Location matters: Barnstable Recreation serves multiple sites. A program listed in the Town catalog is not necessarily held at HYCC. Check the exact location on the program detail page.

Families comparing youth programs and school-based recreation can also use our Davis Community Center after-school and recreation guide to understand how another municipal system organizes enrollment, drop-in access and scheduled activities.
