The nonprofit began in 1972 as the Child Development Center and expanded its work to serve people across different ages and disability-related needs. It reports serving 17 Middle Tennessee counties through its broader programs, but individual services may cover fewer counties.
Early Intervention: Infants & Toddlers
The Early Intervention program supports children from birth through age two who experience developmental delays or qualifying disabilities. Services can include specialized instruction, family consultation and support in natural environments such as the home or community.
How to Request Early Intervention
- Start with the official CDC programs directory.
- Find the Early Intervention location serving your county.
- Contact the listed county program or main office.
- Explain the child’s age and your developmental concerns.
- Ask how to obtain an evaluation or referral under the applicable Tennessee early-intervention process.

- Keep copies of evaluation results and any program decisions.
Some CDC county teams have separate office hours. For example, its Lincoln County center in Fayetteville lists Monday–Friday 8:30 AM–3:30 PM, while Giles County lists 7:30 AM–4 PM. Confirm the location for your county before traveling.
Children’s Center for Autism: Therapy & Enrollment
The Children’s Center for Autism (CCA), a CDC program, provides behavioral therapy for children with diagnosed autism spectrum disorder. Its main program information describes services for children ages 18 months to 12 years, with different levels of support according to age and needs.

| Diagnosis | CCA states that it does not diagnose autism; ask staff for diagnostic referral resources. |
| Costs | Insurance is the first payment source; applicable deductibles, copays and coinsurance may be the family’s responsibility. |
| Waiting List | The official FAQ advises families to apply even when immediate treatment openings are unavailable. |
How to Apply for Autism Services

- Open the official services application.
- Complete the requested child and family information.

Family Support Program: Eligibility & Assistance
CDC’s Family Support Program serves eligible families in Bedford, Marshall, Lincoln, Coffee, Franklin and Moore counties.
The published eligibility description focuses on severe or developmental disabilities expected to continue indefinitely and resulting in substantial limitations in at least three major life functions. The service coordinator evaluates the specific eligibility and household needs.
Examples of Support Services
| Support Area | Examples |
|---|---|
| Caregiving | Respite, sitter care, daycare and personal assistance |
| Housing & Accessibility | Home modifications, specialized equipment and modifications |
| Daily Living | Nutrition, clothing, supplies and homemaker assistance |
| Transportation | Transport assistance for qualifying needs |
| Health & Family | Health-related nursing care, family counseling and evaluations |
| Other Needs | Housing-related costs and summer camp assistance where eligible |
How to Apply for Family Support

Support depends on program requirements and available resources. Inclusion in a list of potentially covered services does not guarantee that an individual expense will be approved.
Senior Equipment Loan: Free Mobility & Safety Equipment

For other types of older-adult support, such as meals, transport and social programs at traditional local facilities, see our senior community center services guide. Those are separate services and are not automatically offered by CDC.
Employment Services, Vocational Training & MAPs
CDC supports people with disabilities seeking employment and greater independence. Its Community & Employment Services program includes job-readiness assistance, workplace training, job placement and ongoing employment support.
| Program | Purpose |

| Pre-ETS | Pre-employment transition activities for eligible students with disabilities. |
| Vocational Rehabilitation | Coordination with Tennessee vocational rehabilitation services. |

| MAPs | Medicaid Alternative Pathways to Independence: skill-building related to employment, community living and personal independence. |
The official MAPs page says participants must have an intellectual or developmental disability diagnosis and be within three years of high-school graduation or already graduated. It also describes restrictions on concurrent participation in other long-term support programs such as ECF CHOICES, CHOICES, Katie Beckett and 1915(c) waivers.

- Describe the participant’s age, county, work goals and existing program enrollment.

- Arrange an assessment or planning conversation if the program determines one is appropriate.
For MAPs questions specifically, email maps@cdctn.org.
Can You Rent Rooms at Community Development Center?
The Shelbyville nonprofit’s official website does not publish a general public banquet-room, gymnasium or private-party rental price list. Its primary purpose is delivering disability and family-support programs.
Do not confuse different organizations: Other facilities named Community Development Center, including municipal buildings in other states, may rent rooms or kitchens. Their prices and contracts do not apply to the Shelbyville CDC.
How to Ask About Meeting Space
- Call the main office at 931-684-8681.
- Explain whether the request concerns a disability-related meeting, community partnership or private event.
- Ask whether any space is available to outside groups.
- If available, request the capacity, accessibility arrangements, permitted use and written cost.
- Request a formal agreement before making payment or announcing an event.
For examples of organizations that do publish meeting room and gym rental policies, our All Peoples Community Center guide covers a separate Los Angeles nonprofit with rentable facilities.
Location, Directions & Arrival
Main CDC office: 111 Eaglette Way, Shelbyville, TN 37160.
The main office is in Bedford County. The organization also operates or coordinates services at locations in other Middle Tennessee counties, so the Shelbyville office may not be where a participant receives therapy, evaluation or ongoing services.
What to Prepare Before Contacting CDC
- The name of the program you want to access.
- Participant’s age and county of residence.
- A brief explanation of the support needed.
- Current service or referral information, if applicable.
- Insurance details if applying for a program that uses insurance.
- Questions about costs, funding, eligibility and waiting lists.
- Any accessibility or communication accommodations required.
- A safe way for staff to contact you with the next steps.
Do not send sensitive medical or disability records to an unrelated website. Ask CDC which official intake channel should be used for documents.

Other Community Resources & Service Comparisons
CDC’s disability-service coordination differs from a medical primary-care clinic. If the main need is a doctor, dental care or behavioral-health appointment rather than disability case coordination, our Partnership Community Health Center guide explains another nonprofit healthcare model in Wisconsin. Its location, insurance and fee policies do not apply to Tennessee CDC.
CDC also offers ways to support its mission through volunteering, internships, donations and employment opportunities. Interested people can use the official CDC website to find current openings and contact information.
