Explore Newark Community Park: Playgrounds, Courts & Hall Rentals
Newark Community Center Park, also called Newark Community Park, is a city-operated public park at 35501 Cedar Boulevard, Newark, CA 94560. The approximately 16–17-acre recreation area includes children’s playgrounds, lighted tennis courts, a basketball/handball court, picnic tables, public restrooms, and the neighboring NewBark Dog Park.
The park also contains the historic Newark Community Center building, which can accommodate approved weddings, celebrations and meetings. The outdoor park and indoor rental hall operate differently: visitors can use the park during permitted park hours, but the community center building is not open as a regular weekday drop-in recreation center.
Information reviewed October 26, 2026. Rental fees, operating restrictions and park availability may change. This is an independent guide, not a City of Newark website.
Park Hours vs Community Center Building Hours
The outdoor park, rentable hall and dog park should not be treated as one facility with one opening schedule.
| Area | Visitor Access |
|---|---|
| Newark Community Park | Outdoor public recreation during permitted park hours. Check posted entrances and City regulations; do not assume 24-hour access. |
| Community Center building | Closed to ordinary weekday drop-in visitors; available for approved weekend hall rentals. |
| Hall viewings | Wednesday, 5:30–7:30 PM. Use the intercom upon arrival. |
| Saturday hall rentals | 8 AM–10 PM, with a 7-hour minimum and 9-hour maximum booking. |
| Sunday hall rentals | 8 AM–10 PM, with a 4-hour minimum and 9-hour maximum booking. |
| NewBark Dog Park | Sunrise to sunset, subject to closures. |
The community center is unavailable for rentals on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day under its published rental policy. Weather and maintenance conditions can also affect access.
Playgrounds, Tennis Courts & Other Park Amenities
Children’s Playgrounds
The park offers play structures for younger and older children. Local visitor information identifies separate play areas geared toward toddlers and school-age children.
Lighted Tennis Courts
Outdoor tennis courts are available within the park. Bring your own racquets and balls and check posted court-use rules. Evening lighting does not guarantee unrestricted late-night play.
Basketball & Handball
A combined basketball and handball court supports informal recreation. Court access may be affected by maintenance, events or other users.
Picnic Tables
Family picnic areas are provided. The City says picnic tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and individual tables cannot be reserved.
Public Restrooms
The City’s park inventory lists restroom facilities at Community Center Park. Confirm availability on arrival, especially for early or late visits.
NewBark Dog Park
A separate approximately one-acre dog park provides fenced spaces for small and large dogs, with its own hours, supervision requirements and rules.
Newark Community Park is primarily an outdoor recreation destination. It is not the same facility as the George M. Silliman Activity and Family Aquatic Center, which is located elsewhere in Newark.
For a broader explanation of how public community recreation centers differ in admission, indoor facilities, scheduled activities and reservations, consult our community recreation center visitor-planning guide.
Picnic Rules, Birthday Gatherings & Large Groups
For a casual family picnic, there is generally no need to submit an application simply to use an available park picnic table.
What the City allows
- Use unoccupied picnic tables on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Bring ordinary picnic food and appropriate outdoor recreation supplies.
- Use the public play areas and sports courts in compliance with posted rules.
- Keep animals leashed outside the designated dog park.
- Clean up food waste and leave tables and park areas usable for others.
Activities that require extra attention
| Activity | City Requirement |
|---|---|
| Reserving a picnic table | Not available; first come, first served. |
| More than 100 attendees | Special Encroachment Permit required from Newark Public Works. |
| Inflatable bounce house | Only in the City’s designated area and subject to vendor licensing and insurance. |
| Large canopy or tent | Canopies exceeding 400 sq ft and tents exceeding 200 sq ft require the applicable Alameda County fire permit. |
| Flying drones or model aircraft | Prohibited on or over City-controlled parkland under the cited Newark municipal rule. |
| Off-leash dog play | Only inside the designated NewBark Dog Park. |
Bounce Houses and Inflatable Play Equipment
Newark permits interactive inflatables, commonly called bounce houses, at Community Center Park only within a designated area. They cannot be placed anywhere a family chooses.
Location restriction
The City’s designated placement zone is between the pathway east of the tennis courts and Newark Boulevard. Associated generators must also follow the designated placement requirements.
Before renting an inflatable
- Tell the rental company the event will take place at Newark Community Center Park.
- Confirm the vendor holds a current City of Newark business license.
- Ask the provider about the required liability insurance documentation.
- Confirm the inflatable dimensions fit the approved location.
- Check whether a separate tent, canopy or fire permit applies.
- Ask how equipment will be delivered without unauthorized vehicle entry into parkland.
- Confirm setup and removal times comply with park requirements.
- Keep adult supervision in place throughout use.
City-sponsored events may be exempt from certain vendor requirements. Private events should not assume an exemption.

How to Reserve Newark Community Center: 8 Steps
Newark uses an online date-request process followed by staff review and a rental contract. Simply selecting a date is not a confirmed reservation.
- Choose your event type. Identify whether you are organizing a birthday party, wedding reception, family reunion, business meeting or another approved gathering.
- Estimate attendance. Use the current 150-person banquet guidance for the Social Hall and approximately 105 for the Patio Room, subject to your approved configuration.
- Decide on Saturday or Sunday. Saturday requires at least seven hours; Sunday at least four hours.
- Review the official rental handbook. Check allowed decorations, insurance, catering, alcohol restrictions, cleaning and cancellation terms.
- Open the City booking portal. Visit newarkca.activityreg.com and choose the facilities or reservation section.
- Search available dates. Find Newark Community Center and submit your preferred date request.
- Follow the deposit and contract process. After approval, the City charges the $500 refundable damage deposit and emails a rental contract, generally within one to two weeks.
- Sign and pay. Return the contract within 48 hours of receipt and follow the City’s payment instructions for the rental fees.
Cancellation, Refunds & Rain-Related Rental Risks
The City publishes cancellation conditions that depend on how far in advance you notify staff and whether the original date can be booked by another renter.
| Notice Given | Published Refund Rule |
|---|---|
| 120 or more days before event | Deposit and rental fees refunded minus $15 processing fee. |
| 60–120 days before event | If rebooked, amounts refunded minus $15; if not rebooked, deposit forfeited. |
| Less than 60 days before event | If rebooked, amounts refunded minus $15; otherwise full deposit and 25% of rental fees forfeited. |
| No-show on event day | All monies paid forfeited. |
Special roof-leak notice
The City’s facility listing warns that parts of the community center may experience roof leaks during rainy weather.
If rain is forecast for the event, the City states that renters may request a refund or reschedule within six months without cancellation fees, provided the rescheduling request follows the published time requirement.
Rental cancellations or rescheduling requests should be provided in writing to the City’s designated coordinator. The currently listed contact for Newark Community Center rentals is ivy.nguyen@newarkca.gov.
Parking, Outdoor Patio & Event Arrival
The Newark Community Center property is inside the public park, and the City states that parking is not reserved for hall renters. Available parking remains shared with visitors attending the park.
For an event of up to 150 guests, this distinction matters: receiving a hall reservation does not guarantee reserved parking spaces for everyone invited.
Event planning checklist
- Tell guests to use the Cedar Boulevard location.
- Plan for shared park parking and possible weekend congestion.
- Allow time for unloading and permitted setup.
- Confirm accessible parking and entry needs with the rental coordinator.
- Ask which exterior doors may be used during the event.
- Remember that outdoor patio lighting is not supplied as a standard feature.
- Keep all event setup and cleanup within approved rental hours.
- Ensure exterior doors are closed by 9 PM.
- Vacate the building by 10 PM.
If an outdoor evening event is planned, confirm approved electrical and lighting arrangements because the City’s rental information states that the outdoor patio itself is unlit.
