Hours: Library vs Community Center

The most important distinction is that Kendall operates as two public services inside one facility. Houston Public Library determines library hours, while Houston Parks and Recreation manages community center activities.

Kendall Neighborhood Library Hours

Tuesday10:00 AM–6:00 PM

Thursday12:00 PM–8:00 PM
Friday1:00 PM–5:00 PM
Saturday10:00 AM–5:00 PM
SundayClosed

These regular hours appear on Houston Public Library’s official branch listing. Holiday closures, special events and maintenance work may change them.

Kendall Community Center Hours

SeasonPublished Recreation Hours
SummerMonday–Friday, 9:00 AM–6:00 PM
Fall and SpringMonday–Friday, 10:00 AM–6:00 PM
Saturday and SundayClosed under the regular community center schedule

Kendall combines two popular municipal services in a single building, similarly to Houston’s Alief Community Center and public library complex. However, Alief also offers services such as health programs and outdoor swimming that should not automatically be assumed available at Kendall.

For an example of another municipal facility combining library learning and city recreation programs, read the Seven Trees Community Center and Library visitor guide. It is in San José, so its registrations and fees do not apply to Kendall.

Gym, Fitness & Kendall Recreation Programs

Houston Parks and Recreation manages Kendall’s community center activities separately from the library. The City lists Kendall among its municipal community centers and fitness facilities.

City reports and historical facility descriptions identify gym use, fitness participation, senior activities, teen activities and after-school enrichment among Kendall’s community functions.

Gymnasium

Indoor recreation and scheduled sports. Open gym availability depends on staffing, organized programs and facility bookings.

Fitness Activities

City fitness resources list Kendall; contact the recreation team for actual equipment availability, age requirements and access periods.

Youth Enrichment

After-school and seasonal programming may include supervised games, recreation and educational activities.

Senior & Community Activities

Fitness, recreational or community engagement opportunities may be scheduled for older adults and other local groups.

Before using the gym: The City’s fitness listing contains a conflicting or mistyped schedule, and the recreation center’s standard hours do not guarantee open gym access. Ask the staff for the exact day’s gym schedule, eligibility and whether a reservation is needed.

How to Join a Recreation Activity

  1. Call the Kendall recreation number: 832-393-1897.
  2. Ask for currently available classes, gym sessions or children’s programs.
  3. Confirm the age range, fee, program dates and whether space remains.
  4. Ask whether registration is online, on-site or handled by Parks and Recreation staff.
  5. Prepare any requested guardian information for a minor participant.
  6. Complete the official enrollment process before attending registered activities.

Meeting Room Reservations at Kendall Library

Houston Public Library lists meeting rooms at Kendall. Meeting rooms are governed by library policies, not automatically by general recreation facility rental rules.

Important Meeting Room Rules

  • A valid Houston Public Library card is required to reserve a neighborhood library meeting room.
  • Reservation applications are submitted through the library’s online meeting room request process.
  • Requests are reviewed by the branch manager or designee.
  • The total reserved period must include room setup and cleanup.
  • Neighborhood library meeting-room use is generally free under current HPL policy, apart from applicable commercial photography charges.
  • Approval depends on eligibility, availability, facility rules and the proposed use.

How to Request a Meeting Room

Step 1 — Define the event.

Prepare the group name, purpose, expected attendance and preferred date.

Step 2 — Check eligibility.

Read the library’s meeting-room policy, including restrictions on activities, occupancy and permitted use.

Step 3 — Confirm library card status.

The individual submitting the reservation must satisfy HPL’s card requirement.

Step 4 — Submit an official request.

Open HPL’s meeting-room page and follow the online reservation form.

Step 5 — Wait for approval.

Do not assume a request is confirmed until the library accepts it.

Step 6 — Follow the approved conditions.

Use only your assigned room and time, and allow for setup and cleanup.

Planning a private party or sports booking? Library meeting-room approval does not automatically cover birthday parties, commercial gatherings or gym reservations. Contact the appropriate recreation office separately for those uses.

How Kendall Became a Shared Community Facility

Kendall’s library history dates to 1969. The branch is named for Belle Sherman Kendall, a member of the Woman’s Club who wrote to Andrew Carnegie seeking support for a public library.

The current 28,600-square-foot library and community center opened in 2010. The facility was severely affected by flooding during Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and subsequently underwent restoration.

Houston reopened the renovated Kendall Neighborhood Library and Community Center on October 14, 2022. City records identify fitness activities, gym usage, youth enrichment, senior programming and volunteer involvement after reopening.

This history matters because older listings may describe the facility as closed or under renovation. For current visitors, use the operating library and Parks and Recreation pages instead of outdated disaster-recovery notices.
