How to Get Your First Counseling Appointment

CCC states that no referral is required to begin. Registration may be completed on a walk-in basis, but the counseling intake and ongoing appointment will be scheduled according to the individual’s needs and urgency.

Call your county office

Choose the local office from the location table. For Cape Girardeau, use 573-334-1100. Explain that you are a new client seeking behavioral health services.

Ask about registration timing

CCC permits walk-in registration, but ask when registration staff are available and whether an initial assessment can be completed the same day.

Prepare the required documents

The official intake FAQ identifies proof of residency, insurance cards if insured, and photo identification. Ask staff about alternatives if a document is unavailable.

Complete registration

CCC estimates roughly 45–60 minutes for registration. Expect questions about personal details, eligibility, payment and what support you are requesting.

Attend the intake assessment

The intake typically takes around one hour. Same-day intake is sometimes possible, but it is not guaranteed. Staff determine the appropriate next service and level of urgency.

Confirm follow-up appointments

Before leaving, check your clinician, date, time, office, appointment format, expected cost and any records or medication information you need to bring.

Estimated first-visit planning: If registration and intake occur on the same day, allow approximately two hours plus any additional waiting time. The provider decides actual appointment availability.

Simple Phone Script

“Hello, I am looking to start services with Community Counseling Center. I live in [county]. Do I need to come in for registration first? What documents should I bring, and when could I complete an intake?”

Insurance, Medicaid, Medicare & Sliding-Scale Fees

CCC reports accepting Missouri Medicaid, managed Medicaid, Medicare and commercial insurance for applicable services. Patients whose charges are not fully covered may qualify for an income-based sliding fee.

If You Have Insurance

  • Have the current insurance card ready.
  • Ask whether your plan covers the intended service.
  • Confirm copay, deductible and authorization rules.
  • Ask whether the assigned clinician is covered.
  • Check whether referrals are needed for specialty programs.

If You Are Uninsured

  • Ask for a sliding-fee assessment.
  • Have household income and size information ready.
  • Ask which proof-of-income documents are accepted.
  • Request an estimate before chargeable services.
  • Ask about available funding or coverage assistance.
Fee accuracy: A single guaranteed counseling visit price cannot be established for all patients. Fees can depend on the service, insurance, household income, eligibility and payment assistance. Ask the office for the current sliding-fee schedule and your expected cost.

Who Can Receive Ongoing Services?

CCC provides crisis support to people from any county or state. For ongoing non-crisis services, Missouri residency is generally required, and the organization’s primary service area covers Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, Madison, Perry and Ste. Genevieve counties.

If you live elsewhere in Missouri, contact CCC to determine whether a particular program can serve you or whether a different provider is more suitable.
