  • Cost: Free under the published program description.
  • Typical program hours: Monday–Friday, 3–6 PM.
  • Activities: Fitness, games, arts, crafts, nutrition and nature.
  • Transportation: Parents or guardians are responsible for transportation.

  • Enrollment: Space and current program availability must be confirmed before attending.

How to Register a Child for After-School Programs

  1. Confirm the child is within the advertised age range.
  2. Call Alief Community Center at 832-395-7075 and ask whether its after-school program currently has vacancies.
  3. Visit the Houston Parks Community Centers directory.
  4. Follow the City’s official recreation registration link to the ActiveNet registration system.
  5. Create or sign into a household account and add the child as a participant.
  6. Find the applicable after-school activity and check its site, dates, age requirements and any forms.
  7. Complete registration, save confirmation and confirm pickup/transportation procedures directly with staff.
For families: Free admission to an enrichment program does not guarantee an immediately available place. Ask about capacity, required paperwork and the next enrollment period before making transportation arrangements.

2026 Summer Enrichment Program: Fees and Exemptions

Houston Parks and Recreation’s 2026 Summer Enrichment Program was scheduled from June 8 through August 7, 2026. It was designed as a nine-week, camp-style program for children ages 6–13.

That summer season has ended, but the 2026 pricing and exemption rules are useful for families comparing the program or preparing for a future registration cycle.

2026 Weekly Fee
$30

Per child per week unless an approved exemption applies.

Age Requirement
6–13

Children must meet the advertised eligibility rules.

2026 Session
9 weeks

June 8 through August 7, 2026.

What Did the Program Include?

  • Arts and crafts activities.
  • Fitness, recreational games and sports.
  • Nutrition education and healthy habits.
  • Nature exploration and birdwatching.
  • Recycling awareness and outdoor learning.
  • Age-appropriate group activities and special programs.

Who Can Qualify for a Summer Program Fee Exemption?

The City’s 2026 fee-exemption information identifies several potential eligibility categories, subject to acceptable documentation.

Potentially Eligible HouseholdDocuments to Prepare
Foster parent or guardianCurrent foster-care documentation
Unemployed parent/guardianAcceptable verification of current unemployment status
SNAP / food assistance recipientCurrent benefits verification
SSI or qualifying public assistanceApplicable eligibility or award documentation
Medicaid recipientCurrent qualifying benefits documentation
Section 8 / federal housing assistanceRelevant housing-assistance verification
Qualifying low-income householdIncome and household-size information under the City’s applicable thresholds

The listed document types are practical examples; final acceptable evidence is determined by the City’s actual exemption instructions.

Fee exemption is not automatic: Eligibility must be verified through the City’s process. An approved fee waiver does not replace program registration and does not guarantee a space in a full program.

How the 2026 Summer Registration Worked

  1. Check the child meets the age requirements and that the selected center participates in the program.
  2. Read the official Houston youth recreation and Summer Enrichment information.
  3. Check whether the household qualifies for a fee exemption before paying.
  4. Prepare any requested exemption documentation and follow the City’s review procedure.
  5. Create or sign into the City’s linked ActiveNet account.
  6. Select the eligible summer session and participating site.
  7. Complete registration and any applicable payment once a place is available.
  8. Keep confirmation and check drop-off, pickup and transportation instructions.

The 2026 registration cycle opened April 1, 2026. Do not assume the same dates, prices or eligibility thresholds will automatically apply to the next summer season.

Gymnasium, Fitness Room and Indoor Sports

Alief Community Center provides indoor recreational spaces for fitness and sports. The facility includes a gymnasium and a fitness room with strength and cardio equipment.

Indoor Gymnasium

Designed for activities including basketball, volleyball, pickleball, badminton, fitness sessions and line dancing.

Fitness Room

Features resistance-training equipment, free weights, treadmills, ellipticals and other cardiovascular exercise equipment.

Walking Track

Provides indoor walking and exercise opportunities. Confirm availability and any facility-use requirements before attending.

Organized Recreation

Sports sessions, youth activities, community recreation and group fitness may occupy the gym or other areas at scheduled times.

Is the Gym or Fitness Room Free?

The City describes many recreation programs as free, but its general facility page does not establish a universal, unrestricted day-pass fee or guarantee free access to every fitness area at all times.

For the gym or fitness room, confirm whether your chosen activity is open recreation, a scheduled program, a reserved group session or a separately approved activity. Ask about age restrictions, identification, registration and fees.

How to Check Open Gym Availability

  1. Choose basketball, volleyball, pickleball, fitness equipment or another activity.
  2. Call 832-395-7075 and ask for today’s schedule for that area.
  3. Confirm participant age requirements and whether drop-in access is allowed.
  4. Ask if you need a registration, reservation or fee payment.
  5. Bring suitable athletic clothing and footwear.
  6. Follow the center’s check-in and equipment-use requirements.
Practical tip: The building’s 8 AM opening time does not guarantee that the gym will be open for basketball at 8 AM. Organized classes and reserved activities may take priority.

Alief Neighborhood Park: Pool, Courts and Playgrounds

The park surrounding the center covers approximately 38 acres and provides a combination of active sports spaces, family play facilities and walking areas.

Outdoor Swimming Pool

Supports seasonal swimming and may host open swimming, lessons, water aerobics or lap-swimming activities depending on the operating schedule.

Playground

Family play areas include a distinctive climbing net structure and climbing features, alongside other outdoor recreation equipment.

Skatepark

Outdoor skateboarding and wheeled recreation space. Bring appropriate protective equipment.

Tennis and Basketball

Outdoor courts provide options for recreational sports. Organized uses or maintenance may affect availability.

Soccer and Futsal

Outdoor sports fields and futsal facilities support training, play and organized community recreation.

Walking Paths

Paths throughout the grounds offer space for walking, light exercise and outdoor recreation.

Alief Pool: What Visitors Should Know

  • The swimming pool is outdoors, not an all-season indoor pool.
  • Seasonal operation, staffing and weather conditions determine available swimming days.
  • Swimming lessons and general open swimming may have different schedules.
  • Confirm age and supervision rules before bringing children.
  • Ask if admission, reservations or swim-class registration are required.
  • For October visits, never assume summer public-swim operations are continuing.

Check the City’s park and center listing and confirm current pool availability with recreation staff.

What to Bring to the Park

  • Drinking water and weather-appropriate clothing.
  • Sports shoes or equipment for your intended activity.
  • Sun protection for outdoor recreation.
  • Protective gear for skating activities.
  • Swimming gear only after confirming pool operation.
  • Identification and confirmation information for registered programs.

Can You Book a Meeting Room?

Yes. Houston Public Library handles reservations for indoor common-space meeting rooms in the Alief Neighborhood Center, rather than treating all indoor rooms as ordinary Parks Department party rentals.

The City’s facility information identifies rooms 1509, 1511 and 1512 as common-space rooms managed through the library.

  2. Estimate attendance and determine any room-capacity or equipment needs.

Senior Health and Wellness

BakerRipley’s senior services at Alief can include daily meals, health education, exercise classes, entertainment, transportation-related support, field trips and social activities. Availability and eligibility should be checked directly with the senior program.

Alief Community Center Rentals, Park Permits and Event Rules

There are three different situations to consider when planning an event at Alief. Booking an indoor library meeting room, reserving an outdoor park area and organizing a larger public festival involve different City of Houston procedures.

Indoor Common Space

Library Meeting Rooms

Free for eligible meetings under Houston Public Library rules. Private celebrations and commercial events are excluded.

Outdoor Park

Small Private Events

The Parks Department considers permitted outdoor reservation requests for private events with up to 25 guests, subject to approval.

Public Events

Festivals and Large Gatherings

Large community events, festivals, parades and similar activities may require a special-event permit through the Mayor’s Office of Special Events.

Rental Decision Table

Your EventCorrect Starting Point
Noncommercial community meetingHouston Public Library meeting-room reservation system
Private birthday or baby showerNot eligible for a free library meeting room; ask Parks about permitted alternatives
Small private outdoor event, up to 25 guestsHouston Parks and Recreation permit request
Large community festival or public special eventMayor’s Office of Special Events
Sports field or gym useConfirm availability and the applicable Parks rental/permit process

How to Request an Outdoor Park Reservation

  1. Choose the desired date, expected number of attendees and type of event.
  2. Confirm that it qualifies for the currently permitted outdoor-use category.
  3. Open the Houston Parks permits page.
  4. Find the Alief Neighborhood Community Center & Park section and review its current restrictions.
  5. Follow the City’s linked reservation process or contact Parks staff for the appropriate permit procedure.
  6. Provide required details about activities, attendance, duration and any equipment.
  7. Wait for City approval and confirmation of applicable fees before relying on the space.

What About Rental Fees?

The City’s general community-center rental fee document includes building, multipurpose-room, meeting-room, kitchen and cleanup categories. But the Alief indoor common spaces follow the Houston Public Library reservation system, so the general community-center fee table should not be treated as a current Alief room-rental quote.

For a sports-area or outdoor rental, ask the City to identify the applicable rate and permit category before making a payment.

Before paying: A request does not guarantee an approved event. Confirm the approved space, maximum attendance, activity type, setup time, insurance or security requirements, fees and cancellation conditions.

When Is a Special Event Permit Necessary?

City-wide or neighborhood festivals, parades, large public celebrations, certain races, dedications and other large-scale activities can require authorization from the Mayor’s Office of Special Events.

For help, call 832-393-0868 or visit the official Special Events Office.

Best next step: Decide whether you need recreation, a children’s program, the library, health services or an event permit. Then confirm that service’s hours, eligibility and booking requirements before leaving home.
