ESL, Computer & Citizenship Classes

LACC’s Adult Education program serves adults who need English-language, digital-literacy or citizenship preparation. Its official adult-education page says the ESL program is for adults 16 and older who are not enrolled in a K–12 school system and who have limited English proficiency.

The current LACC page lists ESL as free and says Delaware residency is required. Students complete an intake process and language assessment so they can be placed at the appropriate level.

Schedule needs confirmation: LACC’s current page lists virtual ESL sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, while a current National Literacy Directory listing publishes broader morning/evening program hours. Because those schedules do not fully match, call 302-494-9545 before registering or planning your first class.

How to Start Adult Education

  1. Call 302-494-9545 or the main LACC number at 302-655-7338.
  2. Say whether you need ESL, computer skills or citizenship preparation.
  3. Ask when the next enrollment cycle starts and whether the class is virtual or in person.
  4. Complete the required intake and English-level assessment if enrolling in ESL.
  5. Confirm the exact class dates, technology requirements and study materials.

Early Childhood Care: Infants, Toddlers & Preschool

LACC operates two early-learning centers in Wilmington and one in New Castle. Infant and toddler classrooms are taught in Spanish, while preschool classrooms use Spanish and English instruction.

The official program page currently lists Early Childhood Services hours as Monday–Friday, 6:45 AM–5:30 PM.

LACC lists several payment/enrollment pathways, including Delaware Purchase of Care and private tuition. Families who do not qualify for Purchase of Care may have other fee arrangements available. Ask the enrollment coordinator for the current rate and eligibility calculation rather than relying on an old tuition table.

Before-School, After-School & Summer Programs

LACC’s school-age programs serve children from kindergarten through sixth grade. The official page lists before/after-school care and full-day summer programming, with care generally available from 6:45 AM–5:30 PM.

Activities include homework assistance, mentoring, arts and crafts, sports, enrichment and family-engagement activities. LACC also operates a summer camp with academic and recreational components.

For older students, the Youth Achievement Center serves ages 12–18 with homework support, college/job/scholarship applications, mentoring, STEM activities, arts, sports and community-service opportunities.

Parents comparing wraparound youth programming with other multilingual community facilities can also review the Northside Community Center guide, which covers after-school programming and bilingual community-assistance services.

Job Search & Workforce Development

The Workforce Development Program helps clients prepare for employment. The current program description includes:

  • Creating or improving a resume.
  • Help completing online job applications.
  • Explaining or translating English job descriptions.
  • Interview preparation and practice.
  • Connections to English, computer and citizenship classes when those skills are a barrier to employment.
  • Periodic job fairs and interview workshops.

Workforce contact: 302-655-7338 or 302-494-7518.

Job fairs and workshops are scheduled events rather than guaranteed daily walk-in services. Call before traveling specifically for employment assistance.

Free Financial Coaching Through Stand By Me Hispano

LACC participates in Stand By Me Hispano, a financial-empowerment program designed around the needs of Latino immigrant households.

The official LACC page describes the coaching as free and confidential. Topics can include budgeting, banking in the United States, credit, avoiding predatory financial services, homeownership and longer-term financial goals.

Contact: 302-655-7338 or 302-377-9656.

Family Support, Domestic Violence & Victim Services

LACC’s family-support programs include short-term case management, domestic-violence assistance, victim advocacy and other support designed to help individuals and families stabilize difficult situations.

The domestic-violence program describes bilingual and bicultural services for survivors, including case management, therapy, support and legal-service connections. LACC also runs a Mujeres Poderosas support group for Hispanic women in Delaware.

The Victims of Crime program can help participants understand victim rights, connect with compensation resources, prepare forms, receive court-related support and obtain referrals.

Immediate danger: call 911. Community-center case-management services are not a substitute for emergency response.

Visitors looking specifically for broad community-support models can also compare the support, counseling and social-program structure described in our Jewish Community Center programs guide.

HIV Testing & Prevention Services

LACC’s HIV Early Intervention Program currently advertises free and confidential HIV testing, with results available in about 20 minutes. It also provides free condoms and referrals for PrEP prevention services.

Program contacts: 302-580-7078 or 302-580-7079.

LACC also lists substance-use prevention outreach, Healthy Homes education, lead-poisoning prevention and radon-awareness resources under Prevention and Advocacy.

Los Abuelos: Services for Adults 60+

Los Abuelos is LACC’s program for Latino adults age 60 and older. Activities can include health education, exercise, lectures, recreation, celebrations and connections to other needed services.

The program also describes food distribution for qualifying New Castle County residents age 60+. Food boxes are free for eligible participants, but income and age requirements apply.

If your main goal is to compare older-adult activities, meal programs, transportation questions or benefit-related community services, our Senior Community Center guide explains the checks that matter before joining a local senior program.

Food Assistance & Resource Referrals

LACC identifies an emergency food closet and food-support programs among its community resources. It does not publish one permanent public pickup schedule covering every food program.

Best approach: call 302-655-7338 before visiting and ask:

  • Is food assistance available today?
  • Which location should I use?
  • Do I need an appointment?
  • Are there New Castle County, age or income requirements?
  • What identification or household information should I bring?

Do not make a special trip based only on an older food-distribution flyer because dates, inventory and eligibility can change.

Parking, Directions & Accessibility

If parking availability or accessible entry is important for your visit, call the front desk before leaving and ask which entrance and parking area should be used for your specific appointment.

Events & Community Activities

LACC holds cultural, educational and fundraising activities throughout the year, including its long-running Grand Ball and Hispanic Heritage Month-related programming.

Event information can become outdated quickly. Before attending a festival, scholarship event, job fair or fundraiser, use LACC’s current event page to confirm the date, venue, admission rules and whether registration is required.
