Visit the UC Davis Student Community Center: Study, Resources & Room Reservations

The UC Davis Student Community Center (SCC) is a 43,000-square-foot student-life and academic resource building at 397 Hutchison Drive, Davis, CA 95616, near the center of the University of California, Davis campus.

The building includes study lounges, student support offices, cultural resource centers, meeting rooms, a multipurpose event space, Wi-Fi, computer-related services and informal gathering areas.

Unlike a municipal recreation center, the SCC primarily supports university students, campus organizations, academic activities and approved campus events. It is not a public gym or swimming facility.

A university facility planning document also lists a longer summer Monday–Thursday schedule. For summer visits, the front desk is the best place to confirm building access.

Holidays & Academic Breaks

UC Davis may reduce hours or close the building during university holidays, Thanksgiving, winter break and certain academic calendar periods.

Individual student resource offices and the cafe may close earlier than the overall building. Finals-week access may also be adjusted.

What Is Inside the UC Davis Student Community Center?

The SCC combines study areas, event spaces and student resource offices in one central-campus building.

Study Lounges

Informal study spaces with tables and seating for individual work, reading and small-group discussion.

Meeting Rooms

Five reservable meeting rooms, labeled A through E, supporting meetings, presentations and workshops.

Multipurpose Room

A larger event space for lectures, receptions, conferences, community activities and approved university events.

Student Resource Centers

Student cultural, academic, retention and support organizations operate offices within the building.

Wi-Fi & Printing

The building advertises free wireless access and a wireless printing station. Printing may have separate campus account or payment requirements.

Cafe & Gathering Areas

CoHo South Cafe, informal seating, outdoor balconies and gathering areas. Food service hours may differ from building hours.

Reflection Space

A reflection room overlooking an exterior water feature provides a different setting from the open lounge areas.

Outdoor Patios

Two adjoining patios are associated with the event and gathering spaces. Approved access depends on the event.

Accessible Facilities

Traditional and gender-neutral restrooms and other building facilities support a broad range of visitors. Ask staff about specific access needs.

Design feature: The SCC is LEED Platinum certified and includes extensive natural lighting and facilities designed to reduce environmental impact.

For another California center that combines community gathering spaces, a public library and youth learning programs, our Seven Trees Community Center and library guide explains how shared campuses may have different access schedules for individual services.

Studying at the SCC: Lounges, Group Work & Finals

The Student Community Center is one of the university’s established indoor study locations. Students use open seating areas for independent work, collaborative assignments and breaks between classes.

Where to Start

  • First-floor lounge: A practical starting point for general studying and informal group discussions.
  • Second-floor study and meeting areas: Useful when looking for a quieter seating area or an approved meeting.
  • Group assignments: Use open collaboration areas or reserve an eligible meeting room if your group requires dedicated space.
  • Finals week: Check the Student Affairs study-space listings for special access times.
  • Printing: Ask about current wireless-printing access, rates and required student credentials.

Before Planning a Long Study Session

  1. Check the building’s current closing time.
  2. Confirm whether finals-week access differs from regular hours.
  3. Bring your laptop, charger and student identification.
  4. Choose an open lounge rather than assuming a reservable room is free for general study.
  5. Check cafe hours if you plan to buy food.
  6. Follow posted space-use and noise guidelines.
Old online guides can be misleading: Some historical UC Davis articles describe the SCC lobby as remaining open until 2 AM. Do not treat that older study-hours statement as the current 2026 schedule.

Student Resource Centers & Support Services

The SCC houses several UC Davis organizations focused on student belonging, retention, academic support and community engagement.

ResourceWhat Students Can Find
Cross Cultural Center Community programs, cultural engagement, educational activities and supportive student spaces.
LGBTQIA Resource Center Community-building, educational programming, support resources and advocacy.
Student Recruitment and Retention Center Student-led academic development, retention programs, equity initiatives and community support.
Undocumented Student Resource Center Information, advocacy and support services for undocumented students and students from mixed-status families.

How to Reserve a Room at the Student Community Center

Event reservations are coordinated through UC Davis Conference & Event Services (CES). The process differs for registered student organizations, university departments and outside organizations.

  1. Select the event category. Decide whether you are booking an ordinary student group meeting, lecture, workshop, reception or another special event.
  2. Check organization eligibility. Identify whether the request comes from a registered student organization, campus department or external group.
  3. Choose a space. Compare meeting rooms A–E and the multipurpose room by layout and expected attendance.
  4. Pick your preferred date. Check campus calendars and prepare alternative dates.
  5. Open the CES reservation instructions. Review eligibility, space availability, reservation timing and required forms.
  6. Submit the request. Authorized university users may use the online reservation process; other applicants may need to submit signed forms according to CES instructions.
  7. Request equipment. Identify microphones, projectors, furniture layouts, catering and accessibility needs.
  8. Confirm the cost estimate. Ask about room charges, staffing, equipment, after-hours access and insurance if applicable.
  9. Wait for approval. Do not advertise the room as booked until CES issues an approved reservation or permit.
  10. Keep event instructions. Save the room number, client access times, approved layout and event contact information.

Reservation Timing, Free RSO Meetings & Costs

Reservation RuleUC Davis SCC Guidance
General event window Requests may open up to 13 months before an event.
Registered Student Organizations Eligible RSOs are allotted two hours of free general meeting time per week under the published policy.
RSO meeting requests Submit at least two business days in advance.
RSO special events Submit at least one month before the event under the stated requirements.

Meeting room minimum Two hours of client access time.
Equipment and staffing Additional charges may apply according to event needs.

Are Meeting Rooms Free?

Eligible registered student organizations can receive up to two hours of free general meeting time each week in designated campus facilities, including the SCC. Free meeting room use is subject to registration, availability and approved standard setups.

Special events, additional hours, room modifications and audiovisual equipment may create charges even for campus organizations.

Why There Is No Single Public Rental Price

UC Davis calculates event charges using the event category, room, client access duration, required staff, setup, technical support, equipment and other needs. The public facility guidelines do not provide one universally applicable all-in price for every booking.

Minimum-hour billing: Even if your event itself lasts only one hour, a standard meeting room reservation may still be billed for the minimum two-hour period. The multipurpose room has a four-hour minimum.

Cancellation Rules

The published SCC facility-use guidelines identify the following cancellation charges:

Room / TimingPotential Charge
Multipurpose Room — 60 days50% of room rental
Multipurpose Room — 30 days75% of room rental
Multipurpose Room — 48 hours100% of estimated charges
Meeting Room — 30 days50% of room rental
Meeting Room — 48 hours100% of estimated costs

Exceptions may apply under the facility policy, including circumstances involving a replacement event or approved rescheduling within the same academic year.

AV Equipment, Catering & Event Rules

Audio and Video

The multipurpose room has a built-in projector, screen, audio system and microphone capability. Meeting Rooms D and E have built-in projectors, while portable projectors may be available for Rooms A–C.

UC Davis requires advance coordination for audiovisual needs. Some equipment carries additional charges.

Setup and Staffing

  • SCC staff manage the setup and breakdown of facility-owned equipment.
  • Clients may not rearrange SCC equipment without appropriate staff involvement.
  • Event access time must include the organizer’s preparation and cleanup.
  • Changes made on the event day may cost extra.
  • The posted policy identifies a $75 charge, in addition to other costs, for certain event-day reservation extensions.

Food & Catering

The SCC is not an unrestricted self-catering venue. The university allows certain full-service catering and drop-off catering arrangements.

  • On-campus full-service catering is generally coordinated through the university’s approved provider.
  • Drop-off food orders may follow different rules.
  • Potluck and self-catered events require permission and compliance with university food-safety policies.
  • Alcohol service requires the appropriate university approvals and permits.
Best practice: Before buying food or booking a caterer, tell the SCC venue manager exactly how food will be prepared, delivered, served and cleaned up.

UC Davis SCC Parking, Permit Costs & Accessibility

The Student Community Center is in the central campus area, where general vehicle access and parking are limited. Most drivers park at a designated lot or structure and walk to the building.

Closest Common Visitor Parking

  • Pavilion Parking Structure: A common campus parking option west of the SCC.
  • Visitor Parking Lot 40: Another parking option near Hutchison Drive.

2026–27 UC Davis Parking Fees

UC Davis Transportation Services lists these rates effective July 1, 2026:

Check your parking classification: Affiliate discounts are not automatically available to every visitor. UC Davis zone permissions, permit validity, special-event charges and accessibility rules vary. Follow the Transportation Services rate and zone rules applicable to your vehicle.

How to Pay for Parking

  1. Choose an authorized visitor lot. Check the UC Davis parking map and applicable zone.
  2. Read the signs. Verify zone restrictions, enforcement times and whether the space is reserved.
  3. Use an approved payment method. UC Davis provides AggiePark mobile payment and certain hourly permit dispensers.
  4. Enter the correct vehicle details. Verify the license plate number and selected parking zone.
  5. Select the required duration. Check whether daily or hourly payment is more suitable.
  6. Complete payment. Keep the permit confirmation and follow all campus parking restrictions.

Accessible Parking & Building Access

UC Davis publishes specific disabled parking rules and accessible permit provisions. Visitors with mobility needs should check where their placard or plate is valid and identify the best accessible route to the SCC.

Contact the SCC before visiting if you require an accessible meeting room, elevator access, seating arrangements or other accommodations.
