Saturday7:30 AM–3:15 PM
SundayClosed for normal community center operations
Different official schedules: the City’s main recreation listing uses Saturday closing at 3:15 PM. Its reservation portal lists availability to 3:45 PM. These may reflect different purposes. For a Saturday visit, use 3:15 PM as the safer planning time and confirm the particular facility schedule.

Weather Cancellation Hotline

Call 203-331-4120 to hear Parks and Recreation cancellation information.

If Shelton schools close because of severe weather, recreational activities scheduled inside school facilities are cancelled for the day or evening. Community center closures and schedule changes may also occur, so call before a weather-sensitive trip.

Quick rule: the center’s building hours are not a guarantee that the swimming pool, basketball court, gym equipment or your class will be available throughout the day.

Visitors comparing recreation facilities elsewhere in Fairfield County may also find our Newtown Community Center pool and membership guide helpful. Newtown has separate admission, pool-reservation and event-rental policies.

The indoor pool measures 25 yards with eight lanes and varies in depth from approximately 4 to 9 feet. The City lists stairs and a pool-access lift with a posted weight limit of 375 pounds.

2026 Pool Walk-In Admission

Visitor CategoryPublished Admission
Regular daily walk-in$10 per person
Children younger than 5Free
Guest of a current pool member$5, with the member present and swimming
Annual pool membershipAvailable to residents and nonresidents; check the current membership category for exact pricing

No membership is required to enroll in a listed swimming lesson or aquatics program. Program enrollment and ordinary pool access are separate.

How to Pay for a Walk-In Swim

  • Monday–Saturday: purchase walk-in admission from the Main Office.
  • Sunday: walk-in purchases are handled at the Pool Office using cash only.
  • Sunday cash: exact change is required. Pool lifeguards cannot provide change.
  • Large groups: walk-in groups of six or more can be refused for safety and capacity reasons.
  • Parties or teams: obtain advance approval rather than arriving together on ordinary walk-in passes.
Important: the City reserves the right to suspend or limit walk-in admission, even when the regular pool schedule lists an available session.

Pool Hours vs. Swim Schedule

The recreation portal posts facility-level pool availability, but open-swim, lap-swim, lesson and class times must be checked through the current pool schedule under the portal’s Info tab.

The pool has published morning, evening and weekend availability, but individual sessions, swim lessons, and water fitness may reserve lanes. Do not treat the facility calendar as a promise of unrestricted public swimming.

Child Supervision Requirements

Children under 12: an adult aged 18 or older must accompany them into the water and remain no more than one arm’s length away. One adult may supervise no more than two children under 12.
  • Adults must remain in the water; sitting on the side or pool stairs is not enough.
  • Children wearing flotation devices must stay in the shallow end.
  • Flotation devices must be U.S. Coast Guard approved.
  • Children must sit out on a bench when their supervising adult leaves the water.
  • Pool lifeguards can restrict swimmers to the shallow end based on swimming ability.
  • Outside instructors cannot independently conduct swim lessons in the pool.

Water Competency Test

To demonstrate swimming ability, participants may be asked to jump into deep water, regain the surface, tread or float for one minute, rotate and orient toward the exit, swim 25 yards using an accepted stroke, and exit the water.

Aquatics Programs

Parent & Child Aquatics

Instruction for young children with an accompanying adult, based on program age limits.

Preschool Swim

Introductory lessons for children generally aged 4–5, divided by level.

Children’s Learn-to-Swim

American Red Cross levels for children aged approximately 6–12, from beginner to more advanced swimming skills.

Adult Aquatics

Adult swim instruction, water aerobics, lifeguarding and water-safety instructor courses when scheduled.
