How to Rent Palmer Community Center

The City recommends using its online reservation system. Paper applications are also accepted through the Community Development office.

  1. Choose your event date. Prepare a primary date and an alternate date in case the Depot is already reserved.
  2. Visit the official reservation portal. Open palmer.finnlyconnect.com and use its registration or calendar area.
  3. Review availability. The City states that available dates are displayed in green. Check the date rather than assuming a blank calendar means availability.
  4. Review the rental policies. Read the City’s Depot information packet, including eligibility, fees, capacity, cancellation terms and event restrictions.
  5. Prepare your booking information. Include contact details, event type, proposed date, attendance estimate and any special arrangements.

Rental Rules You Should Know Before Paying

Age and Applicant Eligibility

The City permits residents, businesses, nonprofit groups and civic organizations to apply, subject to its policies. Rental applicants must be at least 21 years old.

Food Preparation

The kitchen is a staging/preparation area rather than a complete commercial cooking kitchen. Renters should plan off-site cooking or appropriate catering arrangements. Kitchen use is subject to the City’s service-provider restrictions.

Setup, Decorations & Cleaning

  • Keep building exits and access routes clear.
  • Do not attach decorations in ways that damage ceilings, walls or fixtures.
  • Do not hang materials from sprinkler pipes or acoustic panels.
  • Return movable equipment to its required position.
  • Remove decorations, personal items and equipment after your event.
  • Dispose of waste according to the City’s instructions.
  • Leave all rooms and outdoor areas clean and undamaged.

Alcohol at Events

Alcohol is subject to the City’s separate Depot Alcohol Questionnaire and Special Regulations. A renter must complete the applicable approval or acknowledgment process before serving or selling alcohol. Do not assume alcohol is automatically permitted with a general reservation.

Event End Time

Access on approved rental days is 8 a.m. to midnight. Events and cleanup must finish by midnight. Use extending beyond that time may require booking another day.

Planning advice: Before arranging catering, entertainment, alcohol service or special equipment, ask Community Development to confirm those arrangements in writing.

Map, Parking & Getting There

The Palmer Community Center Depot is at 610 S. Valley Way in downtown Palmer, Alaska. It is a different address from the City Community Development office, where administrative rental assistance is provided.

The City identifies free public Wi-Fi availability in the Depot parking lot. Parking arrangements and accessible access may differ during busy events. Ask the event organizer or City staff about reserved spaces, unloading, and specific accessibility needs.

A Short History of the Palmer Depot

The Palmer Depot was originally constructed in 1935 during the early development of the Matanuska Valley. As a railroad station and freight facility, it served Palmer during a period when rail transportation was central to travel and supplies in the region.

The historic building was adapted for community use during the 1960s and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It remains a recognizable downtown Palmer landmark.

Today, the historic setting is one of the main reasons the Depot is used for local gatherings and community events. Its role as a historic event space is distinct from a modern gymnasium-based recreation complex.
