Address, Map & Directions

The community center is located at 3700 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. It is part of the Mitchell Park campus near the public library, recreational fields and neighborhood park.

Driving: Use the exact street address when navigating from Highway 101, nearby Mountain View, Los Altos, East Palo Alto or Stanford-area neighborhoods. Traffic and parking availability vary.

Public transportation: Check current local transit routes and stops near Middlefield Road. Do not rely on an old bus timetable because routes and frequencies can change.

Parking: The City identifies parking as a facility amenity, but a guaranteed number of vacant public spaces was not established. Allow extra time for large events.

Wrong-location warning: Mitchell Park Community Center in Palo Alto, California is not Mitchell Park Sports and Community Centre in South Australia. Always verify the city and country before following a map result.

What Is Inside Mitchell Park Community Center?

Rebuilt in 2014, the center is a modern, environmentally conscious public facility with approximately 15,000 square feet of community center space.

The surrounding campus has approximately 41,000 square feet of combined community complex space, including Mitchell Park Library and Ada’s Cafe.

Meeting Rooms

Indoor rooms suitable for meetings, classes, presentations and smaller community gatherings.

Event Spaces

Flexible areas for weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, celebrations, conferences and cultural events.

Courtyard

A landscaped outdoor gathering area centered around a mature California Coastal Valley Oak tree.

Kitchen

A catering kitchen that can be rented separately for approved events requiring food preparation and service.

Technology

Available equipment includes projectors, public-address equipment, Wi-Fi, whiteboards and other room-specific features.

Nearby Library

Mitchell Park Library is on the same campus and provides separate public library services.

If you are comparing broader Bay Area community campuses with recreation classes, indoor sports and event spaces, see our Sunnyvale Community Center guide to activity registration, sports and rentals. Sunnyvale has separate city policies and pricing.

Mitchell Park Recreation: Outdoor Activities

Mitchell Park is more than the community center building. The surrounding public park offers recreational spaces useful for families, children and active visitors.

  • Natural-grass soccer and multipurpose fields.
  • Tennis and pickleball courts.
  • Picnic areas for outdoor gatherings.
  • Children’s recreational areas and the nearby Magical Bridge Playground.
  • Walking paths and green spaces.
  • Water-play and outdoor recreation features, subject to seasonal operating conditions.
  • A fenced dog-park area.
Do not assume everything is inside the building. The outdoor courts, fields, playground and park areas follow their own access and reservation rules. The community center desk’s weekday hours do not define all park operating hours.

For organized field use, recurring sports activities or a reserved outdoor space, ask the City of Palo Alto about the correct permit or booking process.

Mitchell Park Library & Ada’s Cafe

The Mitchell Park Community Center campus includes a nearby library and Ada’s Cafe. These services are separate from the event-rental office.

Mitchell Park Library

A public library where visitors can look for books, study and community learning resources. Library opening hours, borrowing rules, computer access and room availability should be checked through Palo Alto City Library.

Ada’s Cafe

A cafe associated with the Mitchell Park campus. Check its current operating status and service hours independently before planning a meal or coffee stop.

A visitor coming only to use the library should not assume the community center’s Saturday/Sunday front-desk closure means the library is also closed.

Which Space Should You Choose?

Wedding or Large Reception

El Palo Alto Room is the main large-event option. Confirm whether your requested guest count uses dining, assembly or standing capacity.

Business Presentation

Adobe Room offers a built-in projector and can accommodate larger meeting groups. Food is not allowed in this room under the City’s published room description.

Small Class or Meeting

Matadero Room is suitable for a smaller classroom-style event and permits food under the published room description.

Catered Event

Ask about separately renting the kitchen and check all food, equipment, cleaning and catering requirements.

Room division: The El Palo Alto and Adobe rooms can be divided into smaller spaces. Rates and capacities for subdivisions are listed in the City’s room and pricing documents.

For a broader comparison of different municipal rental and eligibility policies, our Southside Community Center rental guide explains why room capacity, deposits and rental rules must be checked for each city separately.

Rental Fees, Discounts & Extra Charges

The City of Palo Alto uses different classifications for facility rentals. The final cost can include room rental, facility-attendant time, equipment, insurance and other approved charges.

Fee classPublished rule
Class I: City useCity and City-sponsored activities generally have no basic rental charge. Staffing, special-use and equipment charges may still apply.
Class II: Qualifying nonprofitsEligible IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofits may receive a 50% reduction on basic room rental fees, with restrictions.
Class III: Standard private useIndividuals and groups not charging admission or collecting funds generally pay basic rental rates.
Class IV: Commercial useBusiness or fundraising activities may be charged the basic rental rate plus 75%.

Additional Costs

  • Facility attendant: The official rental page lists an additional $52 per hour for events taking place outside regular business hours.
  • Kitchen: Separate kitchen rental charges may apply.
  • Equipment: Special technology, furniture arrangements and equipment can affect the total.
  • Insurance: Certain events require general liability insurance.
  • Commercial use: Additional rate classification charges may apply.
  • Setup and cleanup: Reserve enough time for both. Do not schedule only the public-facing part of the event.
Hourly price limitation: The City links to a 2026–27 room pricing PDF, but its full current hourly rate table could not be reliably retrieved during this review. Rather than invent rates, use the official pricing link or request a written quote from the center. The verified $52/hour attendant charge is an additional fee, not the complete rental price.

How to Book Mitchell Park Community Center

The City provides an official rental process. A room is not automatically reserved when you inquire about availability.

  1. Select the room: Choose El Palo Alto, Adobe, Matadero or another available configuration based on your guest count and required setup.
  2. Choose dates: Select a preferred date and a backup date.
  3. Check availability: Open the official room availability page from the City’s Mitchell Park rental listing.
  4. Allow enough notice: The City requires at least one month of advance notice for an application. Facilities can be reserved up to one year ahead.
  5. Complete the application: Use the City’s current Facility Rental Application and provide the event details.
  6. Submit it: The City accepts applications by email, fax or at the community center front desk.
  7. Review the permit: After approval, staff issue a permit stating the booking details, fees and payment schedule.
  8. Pay the deposit: The first 50% of the rental cost is due upon approval, unless paying the full amount immediately.
  9. Pay the balance: The final payment is due no later than 30 days before the event.
  10. Confirm event rules: Finalize insurance, kitchen use, equipment, room setup, accessibility arrangements and cleanup obligations.
Cancellation window: The current City page provides a ten-day period after the first rental payment for cancellation with a full refund. After that period, the initial 50% generally becomes nonrefundable. Check the current written contract for your event.

For an in-person venue tour, email or call in advance. Drop-ins may be accepted, but private events can restrict access to rental spaces.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using Office Hours for Every Activity

Weekday service hours do not automatically apply to library operations, outdoor fields, camps or privately booked events.

Confusing Different Locations

The Palo Alto center is on Middlefield Road. Other Mitchell Park facilities in different countries are unrelated.

Booking Too Late

Rental applications require at least one month of notice. Popular dates may fill much earlier.

Ignoring Additional Fees

Staffing, kitchen use, commercial classifications, equipment and insurance can increase event costs.

Not Counting Setup Time

Plan for furniture preparation, vendor deliveries, decorations and cleanup within your approved rental duration.

Using Last Year’s Camp Schedule

Seasonal class and camp dates change. Use the current Enjoy catalog before registering children.
