Pottery, Art Gallery and Artists in Residence
Greenbelt Community Center is a significant location for the City’s visual arts programming.
Ceramics and Pottery
The ceramics program includes wheel-based pottery and other ceramic arts courses. Classes can cover clay preparation, shaping, surface decoration and related practical techniques.
Some courses are designed for beginners, while others accept people with more experience. The current activity guide provides the exact course requirements and resident/non-resident fee.
Artist in Residence Program
The City maintains artist studios in the historic Community Center. Eight fine artists and craftspersons are listed in its current Artist in Residence program.
Visitors can meet participating artists and view or purchase original artwork during advertised studio open houses and by appointment.
The program’s standard studio is approximately 10 by 17 feet, within shared workspace. The City lists a published monthly studio rent of $238.94 for new residencies, but this is a professional artist workspace arrangement, not a standard public event-room rental rate.
Artists seeking residency must meet application and eligibility requirements. Studio availability and the next application deadlines should be confirmed with the Arts Supervisor.
Exhibitions
Gallery shows, artist talks and art workshops are announced through the Greenbelt Arts program. Some exhibitions are free to view, while certain hands-on classes require advance registration or payment.
For visitors comparing community centers with both creative programs and indoor recreation, our Matt Dishman Community Center guide explains a different city’s approach to arts, classes and recreation access.
Gymnasium, Senior Activities and Community Organizations
The gymnasium can support recreation activities and approved group use, while the senior lounge and game room provide spaces for organized social programs.
Before visiting for gym access: ask whether the gym is open for public recreational use at the time you want to attend, whether any facility identification or registration is required, and whether the space has been reserved.
The building also accommodates organizations and services including:
- Greenbelt Nursery School.
- Greenbelt Museum office and exhibit activities.
- Greenbelt News Review.
- Greenbelt Access Television.
- City Planning and Community Development functions.
- Artist studios and arts-related groups.
These organizations maintain their own program schedules and access rules. Community Center building hours do not necessarily mean every office or organization inside is open to visitors.
If you need dedicated drop-in teen recreation, the nearby Greenbelt Youth Center at 99 Centerway has a separate gym, game room and recreation identification requirements.

History of the Greenbelt Community Center
The Community Center building was constructed in 1937 as Greenbelt’s original elementary school.
The school building also served the young planned community as a gathering place for dances, religious functions, meetings and other shared activities.
After a replacement elementary school was built in 1991, the City obtained grants and other funding to restore and repurpose the historic building.
Today, the center continues its longstanding role as a place for learning, arts, recreation and neighborhood connection.
