Important hours distinction: the City publishes customer-service hours for Parks and Recreation, but it does not publish one universal walk-in schedule for every Community Center room. Classes and approved rentals operate on their own schedules. For a class or event, confirm that specific booking rather than treating office hours as building-wide activity hours.

Information reviewed October 30, 2026. Class dates, rental availability, holiday closures and fees can change.

If you are comparing this with a gym-style recreation facility, our community recreation center planning guide explains why office, class, pool, gym and rental schedules should be checked separately.

Programs & Classes: Children, Teens and Adults

The City says recreation classes are offered from about 6 months old through adulthood. Current Fall & Winter 1 classes and camps are open through the City’s Classes & Camps system, and individual activities set their own age range, dates, fees and capacity.

1Open Classes & Camps

Start with the current City page, not an old seasonal flyer.

2Pick the exact activity

Check age, location, dates, price and remaining space.

3Create an account

The City registration link opens Active Network; your email becomes the username.

4Add family members

Enter participant names, address and phone information before checkout.

5Save confirmation

Confirm the account email and keep the class receipt and first-session date.

Waitlist: if a class or camp is full, the City lets you join the waiting list online. Most classes can be registered online up to the second class when space remains.

Refund, transfer or change requests must generally reach the City at least one week before the activity starts; the City lists a $10 processing fee for each change, transfer or refund. If the City cancels the class, the activity fee is refunded, but the online processing fee is excluded.

How to Book a La Mesa Community Center Rental

  1. Choose the room and realistic guest count. Capacity depends on the venue and seating layout.
  2. Check availability. Use the City facility availability link or call 619-667-1300 before arranging vendors.
  3. Contact Parks & Recreation. Request the current rental application and confirm the total price for your date.
  4. Pay the required deposit to secure the booking. The current rental packet states that the refundable deposit is required at booking.
  5. Finish payment on time. The packet states that all remaining fees are due 30 days before the scheduled event.
  6. Keep setup and cleanup inside the contracted time. Rental packages include setup, event and cleanup time.

Alcohol, Security, Food & Event Rules

  • No smoking or vaping: City facilities and parks are smoke-free.
  • Alcohol: not allowed unless the required special permit is approved. Alcohol-related events also trigger security requirements.
  • Large events: the current rental agreement requires security for events with 151 or more attendees even when alcohol is not served.
  • Catering kitchens: kitchens are designed to maintain food temperature; the rental agreement says cooking is not allowed.
  • Decorations: glitter, confetti, rice, birdseed, open-flame decorations and smoke/fog-type machines are prohibited.
  • Children: renters must ensure children are supervised by an adult.
  • Animals: service dogs are the exception to the facility restriction on animals.

MacArthur Park, Parking & Nearby Recreation

The Community Center is inside MacArthur Park, a 22.22-acre City park. The official park page lists capacity for up to 3,000 people and parking for 290 cars. It also lists a playground, picnic area, community garden, restrooms, recreation center, municipal pool and spa, baseball field and off-leash dog runs.

MacArthur Park follows a different schedule from the Parks & Recreation office: the City park-permit page says MacArthur Park opens at 7 AM and closes one hour after sunset. Do not use park hours to infer indoor class or event access.

Pool users: La Mesa Municipal Pool & Spa is a separate facility at 5100 Memorial Drive. For October 26–November 25, 2026, the City currently lists adult lap swim at selected weekday times and public swim Saturdays 12:30–3 PM. Pool admission is separate from Community Center rentals.

Older adults looking for daily activities, lunch programs, trips, referrals or senior-focused exercise should use La Mesa’s separate Adult Enrichment Center. Our senior community center programs guide explains what to check when comparing older-adult recreation and support services.
