Dance Studio

Dedicated studio space for movement, dance and scheduled recreation activities.

Arts & Crafts Room

Space for creative workshops, art instruction and other age-specific enrichment programs.

Flexible spaces used for classes, group activities, scheduled meetings and other community programming.

Outdoor Recreation

Playground, outdoor basketball court, community garden, chess/checker tables, pavilion and spray park.

The facility also has additional program spaces, including video-related facilities and a stage. The building was completed in 2007 and designed as a LEED green building.

Not an indoor swimming-pool facility: DPR’s official Columbia Heights facility listing identifies a spray park but does not list an indoor swimming pool. Swimming visitors should search the DPR aquatic facility directory instead.

Recreation Programs, Classes & Open Gym

DPR offers activities for children, teenagers, adults and older residents. Programs can include basketball, fitness, dance, enrichment, arts, sports and seasonal camps. The exact selection changes by registration season.

Open Gym Sessions

The official DPR registration portal has published the following Columbia Heights open-gym sessions. These are examples of listed program times and must be checked against the dates and registration status of the session you intend to attend.

ActivityPublished timeCost shown
Open Gym: Columbia HeightsTuesday and Thursday, 7–9 PM$0
Early-childhood open gym, ages 1–4Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 6:30–9:30 AM$0

These listings appeared in the activity portal, but the displayed registration availability was unavailable. Do not treat them as confirmed future drop-in sessions without checking the current activity dates and status.

How to Find an Activity

  1. Open the official DPR Activity Search.
  2. Search by location or type “Columbia Heights” into the activity search.
  3. Select the program, class, gym session or camp you want.
  4. Check the activity number, dates, age range, fee and available spaces.
  5. Register through your DPR household account if the activity requires enrollment.
  6. Save the confirmation and ask staff about equipment or supervision rules.
Free programs: DPR says most recreation programs are free for DC residents. Some special programs, camps or activities have separate fees, capacity limits or eligibility requirements.

DPR Registration: Create Your Account

A DPR online account is used for recreation classes, reservations, payments and selected facility access. A household account can include parents, caregivers and children.

  1. Visit the official DPR Account instructions.
  2. Select the account-creation link for a new household.
  3. Add the adult account holder and any children who need to register for activities.
  4. Check that each participant’s birthdate, name and contact information are accurate.
  5. Complete DC residency verification if applying for resident benefits.
  6. Return to Activity Search, select the desired session and complete registration.

DC Residency Verification

DPR commonly accepts a valid DC driver’s license or DC non-driver ID. Applicants without either may need one eligible identity document and one eligible proof-of-residency document.

Document categoryExamples
IdentityPassport, government photo ID, valid state driver’s license, permanent resident card or another DPR-accepted identity document.
DC residencyUtility bill issued within 45 days, pay stub within 45 days, qualifying lease within 12 months, DC property tax bill or eligible government correspondence.

Residents can upload documents through the official verification workflow. Once DPR approves resident status, their accounts can receive applicable free access, resident registration and discounted fee options.

Account assistance: 202-673-7647, Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–5:30 PM.

Fees: Free Access, Fitness & Nonresident Visitors

DPR’s official account guidance states that admission to its fitness centers and pools is free for verified DC residents. Many recreation programs are also free, but individual class or event fees can differ.

Visitor or activityWhat to expect
DC resident, fitness centerFree admission under DPR resident policy; account and residency verification apply.
DC resident, many recreation classesOften free; check each activity’s displayed fee and registration status.
Non-DC resident, fitness centerPass or membership may be required; use current DPR nonresident pricing.
Specialized classes or campsProgram-specific fees and eligibility rules may apply.
Private rental / park reservationSeparate permit or reservation charges apply.
Avoid outdated membership prices: DPR has changed fitness access policies since older recreation directories were published. Do not use pre-2020 fitness rate tables to calculate current admission.

For a fee-based program, qualifying low-income DC households can seek a reduced-rate determination through DPR. Apply for reduced-rate approval before registering for the activity that requires it.

Outdoor Playground, Garden & Spray Park

The facility’s outdoor area extends beyond the basketball gym. DPR lists a playground, community garden, spray park, basketball court, chess/checker tables and shaded pavilion.

  • Playground: ask whether scheduled camps or maintenance affect the play area.
  • Spray park: check DPR’s seasonal spray-park hours and operating status; it is not the same as a swimming pool.
  • Community garden: contact facility staff about participation, plot availability and neighborhood events.
  • Basketball court: check whether organized activities are scheduled.
  • Pavilion: confirm whether your proposed gathering requires a DPR park-space permit.

Seasonal water features may close because of weather, maintenance or citywide operational schedules. The center’s regular indoor building hours do not establish spray-park operating hours.

The DPR facility reservation portal identifies a small Columbia Heights Park Site associated with the Community Center at 1480 Girard Street NW.

Important Park Rental Rules

  • Maximum 25 people for the small site.
  • No inflatable structures.
  • No animals in the permitted park space.
  • No alcoholic beverages.
  • No gas grills; charcoal grills are the permitted grill type under the published conditions.
  • DPR does not provide grills.

  • Setup and cleanup must fit inside the reserved time.

How to Reserve a Park Site or Indoor Room

DC DPR’s permit instructions distinguish immediately purchasable spaces from spaces requiring permit-office review.

  1. Choose the space: park site, multipurpose room, gymnasium, classroom or studio.
  2. Create or sign into a DPR account: reservations require an account even when search results can be viewed without logging in.
  3. Open permits and reservations: choose the official DPR rental system.
  4. Filter the location: select Columbia Heights Community Center and the desired facility type.
  5. Enter the date and headcount: use the number of guests expected to attend.
  6. Select your times: include setup, the event and cleanup in the requested rental duration.
  7. Review the event questions: provide event details, planned equipment and other requested information.
  8. Check reservation status: some spaces can be purchased directly; other requests need permit-office approval.
  9. Complete checkout: pay the required fee or process the request as instructed.
  10. Save your receipt and permit: do not assume an unapproved request means the space is secured.
Indoor reservation timing: DPR’s rental guidance recommends making requests requiring review 30 days ahead and specifies at least 14 days for processing. Certain rooms can open for reservations seasonally, so dates outside the current booking window may not appear.
