OCCC Visiting Hours & Housing Unit Schedule

The current posted schedule allows visitation Monday through Sunday, excluding Hawaii state holidays. Visits take place between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., but different housing units have separate appointment blocks.

How to Schedule a Visit: Step by Step

Confirm the person’s location

Make sure the person is currently housed at OCCC, not Halawa Correctional Facility, a federal facility, another Hawaii jail, or a different housing program. The visitation procedures differ between facilities.

Check visitor-list approval

The person in custody normally submits proposed visitor names to facility staff. Confirm through the person you intend to visit that your name has been approved or that an applicable immediate-family exception has been authorized.

Call the scheduling hotline

Dial (808) 832-1633 between 9:00 a.m. and noon, Monday through Friday. Ask to arrange a visit and provide the information requested by the visitation officer.

Confirm the date, time and visitors

Ask which housing unit visiting period applies. Confirm the appointment, number of visitors, requirements for accompanying children, and any restrictions affecting the visit.

Prepare identification and clothing

Bring acceptable photo identification and dress conservatively according to the OCCC dress code. Leave unnecessary bags, electronics and restricted items outside the visiting area.

Arrive for check-in

Reach the facility at least 15 minutes before the confirmed appointment. Follow the officers’ instructions, complete required visitor procedures and security screening, and wait for authorization to enter.

Booking tip: If you are traveling from another island or the mainland, call before booking travel. Do not assume that being related to the inmate guarantees immediate approval.

Who Can Visit? Approval, Family Members & Children

OCCC uses visitor approval procedures. According to its published facility information:

  • A person in custody submits a visitor list for facility approval. The detailed OCCC guide describes a maximum of 12 proposed names.
  • Approval may take time. The older detailed guide describes authorization typically being completed within 30 days.
  • Immediate family may have special access during the initial 30 days, subject to proof of relationship and current facility approval.
  • Once a permanent approved list is established, visitors generally need to be on that list.
  • A maximum of two visitors, including children, is permitted for an individual scheduled visit.
  • Children under 17 require an authorized responsible adult escort under the detailed facility rules.
  • People currently on probation or parole, or who were previously incarcerated, may require additional written approval.

The facility does not ordinarily disclose confidential visitor-list information to callers. The person in custody is responsible for communicating visitor approval where permitted.

The visitor-approval and minor-consent details above come from the facility’s detailed visitor handbook, which predates the latest visiting-hours notice. Confirm the current approval procedure and documents with the visitation officer.

Identification & Security Check-In

Visitors should bring a recognizable photo ID. The facility handbook lists commonly accepted identification types such as:

  • State identification card
  • Driver’s license
  • Passport
  • Military identification
  • School identification for minors aged 13–17
  • Other expressly approved photo identification

Adult visitors may be required to sign a notice and consent to search. Security screening can include metal detection, inspection of authorized belongings and other measures consistent with facility policy.

Refusing required screening, carrying unauthorized property or failing to follow officers’ instructions may result in denial of the visit.

OCCC Visitor Dress Code: What to Wear

The published detailed rules require conservative clothing that does not resemble prison attire or contain offensive or gang-related symbols. Because correctional dress codes can be stricter than everyday public-building rules, choose a simple outfit before traveling.

ClothingPractical guidance
ShirtsWear an opaque sleeved shirt with adequate coverage of the shoulders, chest, stomach and back.
PantsChoose loose-fitting full-length trousers without cuffs or unusual pockets.
Dresses / skirtsUse conservative lengths and coverage; the handbook contains specific seated-length and slip requirements.
FootwearWear ordinary appropriate footwear. Bare feet are prohibited.
AccessoriesAvoid jewelry, hats, sunglasses, hair ornaments, large bags and other restricted accessories.
Restricted attireAvoid shorts, capris, transparent or tight clothing, sleeveless tops, padded jackets and clothing with offensive messages.
Safest option: Plain sleeved shirt, loose full-length trousers and simple footwear. Check all clothing with the facility if you have any doubt. Certain details in the older handbook may have been revised.

Bringing Children or an Infant

Children count toward the two-visitor limit. Before the appointment, ask the visitation officer about approved guardianship documents and any child-specific identification requirements.

The detailed facility handbook sets special limits for baby supplies. It lists an additional diaper, one plastic bottle of liquid and one unpadded blanket as permitted items, subject to screening. Baby carriers, baby food and other supplies are restricted in that document.

Do not assume all ordinary baby items can be taken into the visiting room. Confirm the permitted items and current infant-care accommodations before the visit, especially when traveling with a newborn.

What to Bring — Quick Visitor Checklist

  • Confirmed appointment date and arrival time
  • Approved government or facility-accepted photo identification
  • Confirmation that you have visitor approval
  • Required guardianship or relationship documents, if applicable
  • Conservative clothing that meets the dress rules
  • Only essential belongings expressly permitted by security staff
  • Enough travel time to arrive 15 minutes early
  • Current hotline confirmation that visiting is proceeding

Do not bring weapons, controlled substances, unauthorized electronics, gifts, food or other contraband into the secure visiting area. Ask staff about storing belongings rather than relying on lockers being available.

How to Send Mail to Someone at OCCC

OCCC provides a mailing address for correspondence. The detailed facility guide gives this format:

Person’s full name
c/o Oahu Community Correctional Center
2199 Kamehameha Highway
Honolulu, HI 96819-2307

Put your full sender name and return address on the envelope. The facility may reject mail containing unauthorized items, decorative materials, prohibited content or packaging that fails inspection.

Do not send food, magazines, books, money or other property through ordinary correspondence unless the facility’s current rules expressly authorize the method.

Legal correspondence follows separate procedures. Attorneys should use the official legal-mail requirements rather than the ordinary personal-mail format.

Before mailing anything important, check Hawaii DCR’s current correspondence policy, COR 15.02, because the older facility handbook may not reflect every current mail-screening procedure.

Inmate Phone Calls & Video Communication

OCCC uses telephone and tablet communication services provided through GTL/ViaPath. People in custody may have access to calls and video communication during assigned times, subject to authorization and facility restrictions.

  • Family members generally cannot telephone the facility and be transferred directly to an inmate.
  • Personal calls may be monitored and recorded, except for appropriately identified privileged communications.
  • Phone privileges can be restricted under facility rules.
  • Video communication through inmate tablets is separate from the in-person visiting schedule.
  • Charges, available communication services and payment methods should be confirmed through the official provider linked on the DCR page.

To set up an account or confirm supported communication options, start from the State of Hawaii OCCC page and follow its phone and tablet service information.

Sending Money to an OCCC Inmate

The Hawaii DCR facility page states that electronic inmate trust-account deposits are accepted through the GTL/ViaPath Connect Network service.

Verify the person’s facility

Confirm they are housed at OCCC and get the correct identifying information necessary for the deposit.

Open the official DCR facility page

Locate the current inmate trust-account deposit instructions and follow the linked approved payment provider.

Check recipient and fees

Review the inmate details, deposit limit, service fee, payment method and estimated posting conditions.

Submit and retain the receipt

Complete payment only through the approved service. Save the transaction confirmation.

Do not rely on old deposit limits. Older OCCC instructions include in-person cash deposit rules and limits that may have changed. Confirm current electronic and in-person deposit methods before sending funds.

Locating an Inmate, Bail & Release Questions

OCCC staff may be restricted from sharing private information about individuals in custody. If you are unsure whether someone is at OCCC, use the appropriate official agency or court source rather than relying on an unverified third-party inmate directory.

  • Custody status: Hawaii DCR links to SAVIN/VINE notification services on its official website. Availability and detail depend on the case.
  • Bail: The applicable court controls bail decisions and payment procedures. An older OCCC handbook lists an inmate release unit, but payment instructions must be confirmed directly before any transaction.
  • Release: Release times and conditions are case-specific. Do not presume an exact release time from a scheduled court appearance.
  • Urgent family matters: Contact the main facility and explain the emergency to the appropriate supervisor. Normal inmate telephone services are not an emergency message-delivery system.

Special Visits, Accessibility & Legal Visits

Off-island visitors: The detailed facility handbook describes a special-visit request procedure for qualifying visitors from outside Oahu. It directs the person in custody to submit the request through their case manager at least seven days before the intended visit, with approval and proof of travel required. Ask whether this process is still available before making travel commitments.

Visitors with disabilities: Hawaii DCR publishes a policy covering nondiscrimination and accessibility for visitors and guests with disabilities. Contact the visitation hotline early to discuss reasonable accommodation needs, access and necessary documentation.

Attorneys and official visitors: Legal and professional visits may have separate scheduling and clearance procedures. Confirm arrangements directly through the facility and applicable DCR rules instead of using ordinary family visiting appointments.
