Playground Renovation: Important 2026 Visitor Notice

The playground beside Rainier Community Center is closed for renovation. Seattle Parks’ September 30, 2026 project update says construction began under a notice issued August 17 and the City anticipates reopening in early 2027.

The project includes new swings, climbing structures with slides, a canoe-themed play element, a sand play area, seating and accessible pathway improvements.

Families planning outdoor play: Do not assume the playground behind the center is open. Pedestrian paths near the construction area are temporarily redirected, and the parking area may be affected by construction activities.

The City identifies an east–west pedestrian detour to the north of the parking lot/play area. It connects toward S Snoqualmie Street, S Conover Way and the intersection of 38th Ave S with S Alaska St.

See the official playground construction update for the detour map and reopening announcements.

Getting There: Columbia City, Transit & Parking

Rainier Community Center is located at 4600 38th Ave S in southeast Seattle, near Columbia City, Rainier Playfield and Genesee Park.

Driving and parking

Use the 38th Avenue S address for navigation. A parking lot serves the site, but construction activity can affect nearby parking and pedestrian paths. A specific number of available public parking spaces was not confirmed.

Public transportation

Columbia City’s light rail station and neighborhood bus services are local transit options. Confirm your actual route and walking directions before traveling rather than relying on an estimated journey time.

What Is Nearby?

  • Genesee Park: Immediately east of the community center, extending toward Lake Washington.
  • Columbia City: A nearby neighborhood with restaurants, shops, library services and public transportation.

If accessibility matters for your visit, ask the center about the best entrance, accessible routes and any temporary construction-related changes. The building received major ADA accessibility improvements in 2023.
